Artistic Background:
The Spanish bass-baritone Juan Lago grew up in Zurich, where he discovered his passion for music at an early age. After graduating from high school, he began his vocal studies at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and made his operatic debut at the Lucerne City Theatre while still a student.His career took him all over Europe, where he established himself as a versatile opera singer, performing roles such as Leporello, Figaro, Papageno, and Don Giovanni. He also captivated audiences in Nino Rota's children's opera Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, appearing in performances at the Volkshaus Zürich and the Tonhalle St. Gallen. Further highlights included gala concerts celebrating the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi's birth, featuring arias from Macbeth and Don Carlos.
Thanks to his broad repertoire and linguistic competence – Spanish and German as well as fluent Italian, French and English – Juan Lago is also in demand as a concert singer. He has performed numerous oratorios both in Austria and abroad, including Schubert's Mass in B-flat major at the Salzburg Festival.
After studying at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), he continued his studies at Tel Aviv University, graduating with distinction with an Artist Diploma in opera, oratorio, and art song. He received further artistic inspiration through collaborations with renowned opera singers such as Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda, and Dieter Schweikard.
